Responsible for education (primary and secondary schools), adult education, student grants, libraries, youth service provision, highways (but not cleaning of foot paths), fire services, trading standards, disposal of household waste (but not the collection of it), social services, help for elderly people and the disabled (although grants for the disabled housing come from Sedgemoor District Council), strategic planning.

Housing (Council owned, some 4,500) electoral services, including maintenance of the electoral roll, grants to renovate private housing, recreation, leisure, tourism, economic development, environmental services (including collecting your rubbish and green “recycling” boxes and street cleansing), public gardens and open spaces, development control (everyday planning) and running its own “Direct Labour Organisation (Sedgemoor Commercical Services)” to complete in the “open market” for work like house maintenance, leisure and gardening services (the notional profit helping to keep down your council tax), and lastly the collection of council tax for all three Authorities as well as the Police and Drainage Boards.

Planning on-line is an internet service that allows you to view details of planning applications that have been or are being considered by the District Council, monitor the progress of an application and to search a weekly list of applications received and decided. You can also subscribe to a weekly digest of new applications for the area.
