Cheddar Parish Council has approved its annual precept (the Parish Council’s share of your Council Tax) for 2025-2026 at a meeting of full council on 27th January 2026. The budget focuses on maintaining services for residents of Cheddar, whilst also providing services expected by the many annual visitors to the village and gorge.
Cheddar currently has 3,071 properties, 72% fall into Council Tax Bands A-D. The agreed budget will mean the following increases:
- Band A: 38p per week
- Band B: 44p per week
- Band C: 50p per week
- Band D: 57p per week
Following the decision of Somerset Council in April 2024, the Parish Council is having to take on more services at a local level which does mean additional financial commitment for local residents. The Parish Council is negotiating hard with Somerset Council, although sadly progress with Somerset is slow. Underinvestment on the toilets at Daghole and Cliff Street car park by Somerset Council leaves the Parish Council facing substantial capital investment to get these facilities back to an acceptable standard.
The Parish Council fully understands that this is a challenging time for many residents, and balancing affordability with the continued delivery of services has been a difficult task. Somerset Council has refused to transfer the ownership of assets such as Cliff Street and Church Street car parks to help cover the additional costs of local service provision.
Cheddar Parish Council remains one of the most cost-effective in Somerset, and this increase will help preserve and enhance the quality of services in Cheddar. Residents can be assured that the Parish Council will continue to work hard to balance financial sustainability with the needs of the community.
